James turned his head as the girl spoke. So it seemed she wasn’t quit the trouble maker he had first thought. Not that he really cared. The blonde laughed slightly “I know what you mean sweetheart” he chuckled and gave one last glance towards the school. He checked his watch… it would still be a few hours before he had to pick up the little girl from the friend she had told him she was staying with after school. He sighed but was glad the girl had not had to much trouble adjusting. He looked up at the sky offering the girl another cigarette as he lit his and blew out some smoke. It was a nice day, sunny with deep blue sky and hardly any clouds. When he had been four or five years old he used to be able to spent hours laying on the grass staring up into the sky and watching clouds drift by trying to think of what they looked like. His father had not approved of course, but his mother had found it endearing.
He listened as his classmate told him what she liked doing. So a fellow reader huh? He smiled as she continued and named drawing, go on adventures and that she used to like to run around in the woods and climb trees. Then to put the deed to the word she jumped up into a tree and hung from a branch. She laughed before jumping down. The blonde smiled shaking his head “Well, Sheena, I think I have the perfect idea” he smiled as she walked back towards him with a big smile and a twinkle in her eye he had not seen before.
He nodded “It seems like it” he laughed. Firecracker might just be the best way to describe this girl. It wasn’t necessarily a bad thing though, he had to admit. It was something different and she just seemed so full of life that it was almost infectious. He turned towards her and returned her smile before he turned a corner. He remembered, when they had come up the road to their new home about a week ago that he had seen some wood maybe a few minutes back, and since it was a nice day, he figured she might like to go ‘on adventure’ and head into the woods and see what they could find.
He knew he was playing a dangerous game. His fosterparents would have a fit when they’d get home and he wasn’t there, and none of his chores were down, but honestly he really could not care less. They would always find something else to punish him for, and really it didn’t bother him. He knew though, that he could not do this much longer. It was slowly driving him insane, and he was really starting to think that they were actually just doing this to watch him slowly loose it. He sighed inwardly once again cursing his father. really.. what had that fucking bastard been thinking? He however couldn’t ignore the stabbing feeling of guilt. If only he hadn’t let… he had known something bad was going to be going down and he knew he should have at least tried to help…
He did not want to think about it however and simply concentrated on the road and where he’d take the girl. Soon the wood came in sight and it wasn’t long until they reached the first trees “How ‘bout we go look for some adventure in here?” he suggested as he looked around. He had never really been one for nature and animals and whatnot. Sure he liked it all fine, but it wasn’t anything more then that. He however figured it couldn’t hurt to have a walk around here and see what one could find here. The blonde ran a hand through his hair and wondered if he’d made the right choice bringing her here. He soon find out though since well, they were here now and it he would just have to wait and see the girls reaction.

Zarha chuckled. She couldn't help it. There were a lot of sides of her, including some that weren't so amazing. She kicked the ground as she walked beside him, then looked up at the sky. The day had felt so different from her usual "scheduale", and it was nice to be with someone...new. She blinked once before looking up at him and watching him speak. She smirked a wild, grinning sort of smirk and continued her eyes to glitter. She watched him head towards the woods and smiled even brighter. She thought about the past times when she had been inside the forest; it was fun, but somewhat dangerous anyways. And it wasn't as simple. But she smiled anyways and took the offered cigarette, puffing out one string of smoke. It burned in her lungs, which personally now felt good to her, but she still liked the fresh air better. It was the only thing that reminded her to be strong. But the cigarettes helped her calm down, so she continued to take whiffs.
Zarha paced for a few seconds, but then continued to walk forward. She turned to him, cocking her head to the side slightly. "So you want to go into the woods? Dangerous, but fun. I love it!" she cheered with another blue sparkle in her eye as she began to skip slightly, the cigarette sticking out the side of her mouth.
When they entered the woods, she looked around for any sign of movement then shrugged and continued walking. She plopped herself down on a log and began to rub her aching feet. They hurt, yes, but it never seemed to bother her. She owned shoes, but preferred not to wear them. Only when she was INSIDE the school would she actually have something on her feet. But otherwise, she loved the feeling of wet cool grass on her toes, or the burning pavement on her soles. Somehow, she just always ended up wearing baggy t-shirt, jean skort, and bare dirtied feet. Her hair was long and dark, always clean but slightly messy yet still smooth. Her appearance was somehow like her personality. Many looks.
Zarha smiled at the thought, and crossed her legs and looked at James again.
"What should we do? Do you know of any spooky little creatures in here? Or crazy drunken witches? I've heard many rumors..." she spoke half-jokingly with a small smile.

James smiled. This girl rather amused him. She seemed to have a lot of sides to her, and it intrigued the boy. It usually was easy for him to figure people out… know what makes them tick, but with this particular girl he was unsure. Her smile brightened and her eyes glittered as she took the cigarette and told him she’d love to go into the woods. He smiled as he watched her skip of. He quickened his pace slightly to keep up with her. They entered the woods and he looked around at all the various trees and plants. It had been a while since he’d been in a wood. If fact the last time had been about 8 or 9 years ago at the back of his parent’s house. He’d loved climbing trees and finding things to build a ‘hut’ with. His mother had once made him promise however to never go in there without telling her. She’d been looking for a whole afternoon before he’d finally heard her calling. The blonde smiled slightly at the memory and turned to the girl who had sat down on a log.
He joined her as she rubbed her feet. He hadn’t thought of that… “shouldn’t be putting your shoes on sweetheart?” he asked as he leant back against a tree-trunk smoothing down his jeans. He normally just wore jeans and a simply long-sleeved shirt to hide his injuries. He would be damned if he’d let anyone find out about what happened back home. It just didn’t matter and would most likely only generate pity, and if there was one thing the boy hated.. it was pity. He sighed inwardly… everybody should just get of his back already and simply leave him be. Those people from social services seemed determined in getting him to straighten up. He had another appointment with them tomorrow and he could already imagine how that would go. It would just annoy the freaking crap out of him.
"What should we do? Do you know of any spooky little creatures in here? Or crazy drunken witches? I've heard many rumors..." she asked.
James raised an eyebrow “Rumors?” he asked “about spooky little creatures or crazy drunken witches?... Sorry… no…” he smirked “This ain’t the Blair witch project” he shrugged. “Tell me about those rumors” he asked since well, scary stories, to him, were just the best. It was always fun to listen to local legends and maybe find out the truth behind them. He’d have to keep an eye on the time though, since he’d have to pick up the little girl in time…

Zarha took a wiff of the smoke then carelessly flicked it to the side. She was too lazy now to go hunt down a garbage bin now. Sighing, she looked up at him with another smile then scoffed. "Nah. I own shoes, but I left 'em back at the school. And believe me, I am NOT going back to that clinic, that's for sure." She smiled mischieviously and jumped up on a tree. Her feet dangled over his head as she sat on the branch, wiggling her toes. Her feet were beginning to feel better with a good rest.
She couldn't help but to giggle when he had answered her question. Zarha was beginning to feel foolish around James. After all, she couldn't stop changing her ways. Once she would be upity and bouncy, the next, lazy and random. There was no end to her mixed personalities, and she could see that James knew that. Smiling again, she leapt up onto another branch and lay there on her stomach, her feet still dangling over the edge.
"Oh." She shrugged. "I don't know. People at school say there are evils and magicians and witches hiding in the woods." She laughed at the endless possibilities. "But that is just myths and rumors." She swung herself over the edge to face him, her hair hanging loose around her face. "And besides, I bet we could take them on any day."

James sighed as he folded his arms behind his head closing his eyes. He could not believe how things had changed over the years. It was like he’d become stuck in a rut. Every day the same old routine. Get up, feed the family, clean the breakfast stuff. Then heading upstairs to clean the latest bruises and injuries. Taking the young girl to school after which he’d have to suffer through his own classes, more often then not followed by detention for one thing or another.
Hey, he couldn’t help he had inherited his father temper could he?
Then it would be going back home to clean the house. That had somehow become his responsibility. Then he’d have to cook diner and do the dishes, tending to his wounds comforting the small child before getting completely wasted and rolling into bed to do it all again a few hours later. It had left him somewhat exhausted.
He smiled nodding as she explained she’d left her shoes back at school. Hey... if that made her happy, who was he to judge? The blonde boy tilted his head as she spoke again.
"I don't know. People at school say there are evils and magicians and witches hiding in the woods" she smiled "But that is just myths and rumors" she continued while facing him "And besides, I bet we could take them on any day."
James chuckled “Is that so?” he smiled “I bet we could” he then agreed leaning his head back against the tree “Maybe we’ll find something” he smiled looking around.

[Oh my. So so so so sorry I forgot about this thread. I found it hiding in my files today and realized what it was. I hope we can still continue. Looking forward to it.]
"Sure!" Zarha looked quite excited now, nodding and still hanging upside down. At the mere thought of having an adventure with this boy gave her endless possibilities of thoughts inside her wide ranged imagination. Giggling slightly, she fell to the ground, perfectly landing on her feet.
She then leaned against the tree next to him. "Yeah, maybe we will." Zarha glanced up at the sky and noticed in the position of the sun that the school was going to end any minute now. She looked at the blond, noticing his observing face as well, which seemed to be deep in thought. Glancing back at the school about a block away she shrugged and looked back at him.
"Don't you think we should clear the area? Maybe skip into the next route or something? I'd hate getting caught skipping school again. Not that it matters... I mean, no one ever notices me in there..." she pushed a slightly curled lock of shiny black hair away from her dirt smudged face, trailing off. "It's just... I can't afford another blow like that when I don't even have any parents and they think I do..." Zarha chewed on the corner of her lip after she finished speaking, watching him, waiting of what they should do.

James sighed as he noticed the girl looing at him. he smiled as she suggested to clear the area and ‘skip into the next route’. He turned his head “sure sweetheart” he agreed as he rose to his feet and frowned as she told him she could not afford to get caught again since they thought she had parents, but that she in fact didn’t. He turned to her “What happened....?” he asked gently wondering if she would even tell him.
In all these years he had never once told anyone about what had happened to his parents.. and it really wasn’t something he’d be eager to share. He had always been a rather quiet and withdrawn. Even with his mother. he had loved her dearly, he really had, but he couldn’t tell her what his father did.. it would have hurt her and really it had been his fault anyway. He knew the rules and he knew how his father could get. It had just been hard for the then young boy to gage the man’s moods. He had quickly gotten the hang of it though...
“You want to move further into the forest?” he asked her as she was lookin at him in waiting... he had no idea what to do though, but hey, staying in the forest was good enough for him... for now anyway. He would have to keep an eye on the time though as he did have to pick up the small girl at some point.

Zarha slowed down for a moment, her back for some reason tensing as if she was being watched by someone other than James. Shrugging off the feeling she looked back at him cracking her knuckles. "Well... I can barely remember...But they died a long time ago when I was about seven... I kind of found my way to this old barn and I basically found a man who helped me mature and grow..." She paused, thinking of the right way to word this. Zarha then took in a long breath and continued. "Then, well...he was old..so..he died. And now...I'm all alone." She shrugged again. "I mean, I'm okay alone...I guess..."
As they walked into the forest further she chewed the corner of the lip and thought about what he now thought of her. Did it honestly make a difference that she told somebody about her past that she had never done? Not to a single person on the planet?
She shrugged the feeling off again, which she frequently did, then looked back at the blonde boy once more. "Sure." her eyes sparkled for a split second, which they hadn't that much in such a long time.

The blond fell in step with the girl, letting her set the pace as she slowed down and told him about her parents. He listened intently to her story and nodded in understanding as she told him she could barely remember. "I'm sorry sweetheart" he told her a hand on her shoulder for a moment. This really was NOT his strong suit. Comforting others... "That must have been rough..."
He remembered the night his parents had died with perfect clarity. How his mother had woken him, telling him to get under the bed. How his father had banged on the door as his mother had gone downstairs. The breaking down of the door followed by his mother panicked screams and then... the loud 'bang' and something heaving sliding to the floor... The heavy footsteps on the stairs... The boots that came into view and someone sitting down on his bed... another gunshot followed by the silence of death...
He shook himself out of this revery however and smiled at the sparkle in her eyes "Alright then sweet-cheeks" he agreed as they walked further into the forest and he simply looked around occupying his mind....

Zarha watched his face for a moment when he lay his hand on her shoulder for a moment, then sighed. "Yes, well... It was...but I'm okay..." She nodded just as to clarify she was alright. At times when she was alone or has just gotten back from work, she felt beat down and just right weak and alone. She would put her hands in her face and cry for almost hours, remembering the good times when her mother would brush her long used-to-be smooth black hair back and smile, kissing her forehead.
"I have my mother's hair. Long and black. And I am pretty sure I have her eyes. Color and shape." she nodded. "That's all I remember... I mean, I guess my father had dark hair too...and..brown eyes, I think. Sometimes it's honestly hard to remember." she shrugged as she she looked at the blond boy again.
Zarha was beginning to really enjoy the way he called her several different cute little nick names... it was as if they had known each other forever. Like brother and sister. It was nice. Even when Zarha had a family, she was an only child.
