James sighed as he walked up to his new school. He threw away his cigarette-but. Was there anything worse then a first day in a new school? He entered the building and headed in searched for the principal’s office, where he assumed he’d be spending a lot of time, to collect his timetable. He then went in search of his first class… History. He sighed sitting down in the back row. He yawned taking out his books and opened one he had just started reading. It might come as s bit surprise, but the young southerner loved to read. It was his way of escaping his hell-hole of a life. His casually leant back in his seat his eyes lazily scanning the book. He really had no intention to pay any attention to the teacher what-so-ever.

The teacher had started his class and kept his eyes on the new blonde that had just started school today. The boy seemed rather into the book he seemed to have brought. The older man smiled and shaking his head as he walked over to the blonde’s desk.

“What was the cause of the WW1.. Mr. Ford?” he asked standing right before the boy.

“People are morons…” he replied without looking up from his book.

The teacher was a little taken aback by the answer “thank you for that insight Mr. Ford” he shook his head. The rest of the class just chuckled.

James sighed bored “The relationship between the countries was already strained because of the new imperialism. When the crown prince of Austro-Hungary in 1914, it was the last straw and tada… WW1” he summarized. There were a few more things that had contributed, but hell.. who cared? He hadn’t looked up from his book and now lazily turned a page.

The teacher raised an eyebrow “very well, just put the book away” he ordered smiling slightly.

The blond simply shrugged “sure teach” he responded putting the book back in his bag. He sighed… now how was he going to get through this class? He really hated transferring school. His whole body still ached from the beating he had received the night they all had left the last place. So yeah, he pretty much had that one coming, he had taken a neighbour’s car with a few friends for a joy-ride in drunken bravado.
He smirked… that had been a great night. There had been alcohol… drugs. God had he been wasted… luckily the police hadn’t shown up until the next day. Ah well.. he’d just gotten through it like he had survived the rest of his life. He was a loner anyway. He just leaned back in his seat staring out of the window. This was going to be one looong day.

Finally though, the bell rang and he went outside sitting on the grass with his book. The blond lit a cigarette and blew out some smoke. School was just so boring. The boy leaned back on his elbows opening the book.

When the bell rang, signalling that class was over, Julia collected her things and walked quickly towards the door. She let out a loud, irritated sigh upon noticing the large crowd that was blocking it in their scramble to leave the room. It was always like this after class, as if it was the most terrible thing that the students could ever endure. She rolled her eyes and tapped her foot impatiently on the ground, trying her best to keep from giving the rotten brats a piece of her mind. It was fine to want to get outsie, or wherever else they planned on going, but that didn't mean that they had to block the whole damn doorway. Luckily though, the blockage cleared up a few minutes later, much to her pleasure. Julia was just about to exit the classroom when she heard her teacher call her back.

"Julia, could you come here for a moment please?"

Crap. Tucking a strand of wavy blonde hair behind her ear, she put on her most cheery smile and turned around to face the middle-aged man. "Yes, Mr. Munroe?" She asked, with a falsely sweet tone to her voice. Julia Mancuso was far from sweet. She was cruel, rude, and just plain cold-hearted; everybody at school knew it. This was why most people liked to stay clear of her, because she intimidated them. Julia was good at intimidating people, and she enjoyed doing it, too. Being manipulative, she could easily get what she wanted at all times, granted the person she was trying to manipulate wasn't as clever as she was.

"You're failing science," Mr. Munroe told her, breaking the blonde out of her thoughts. "In case you didn't know, Miss Mancuso, you're supposed to actually do work at school."

Julia laughed coldly, as if this was he'd just made the funniest joke in the world. "I don't work," She said finally, her tone deadly serious. The blonde didn't even wait for her teacher to reply. Instead, she whirled around and continued to head for the door. This time, he didn't call after her.

Once Julia was outside of the classroom, she wondered where exactly she should go. Sure, she probably needed to go to the library and get some work done for science, but why would she work when she could find something better to do? She smirked at the thought, held her head high, and began to walk towards the school's front doors. Might as well go outside, she figured, since there was nothing else to do. Besides, it was a nice day. The sun was shining, and the spring weather made it beautifully warm outside.

Pushing open the door, she quickly strode down the stone steps and started to survey the yard. There were students everywhere, searching for shady spots to sit or just chatting up a storm. She noticed a few people glance her way, but paid absoloutely no attention to them. However, she supposed that she did need someone to associate with, even though she usually prefered to be alone. And, when her eyes landed on the new guy, sitting beneath a tree, the blonde figured; why not?

Calmly, she walked gracefully over to the tree and sat down beside the boy, without giving him so much as an explanation, or even a simple hello.

James leaned back against the tree, for some reason unable to keep his mind at the book. He sighed. His life was just one big, pathetic mess. The blond boy just shook his head. His mind travelled back.

A 8 year old standing among other people coming out of the church, heading down to the graveyard where a hole was ready for his mother’s casket. He had seen her.. after he had finally mustered up the courage to come out of his little hiding place. She had been covered in blood, slumped against the wall. Pale, and when he had reached out a small hand to remove the hair from her face and wake her he remembered how cold she had felt. Now that she’d been cleaned up though. She had looked pretty. Like a blond angel.

Yeah, yeah, how sappy right? But well… ‘sue me’ as people say. The teen really couldn’t care less.

His father had not gotten a burial. Truth be told, to this day, the young southerner had no idea what happened to his remains, and well… he hadn’t ever bothered to find out.

After the burial, a woman from ‘social services’ had come up and talked to him. She had assured him everything would be alright, and that she had arranged for him to stay at his uncles. That, however, had not worked out well. His uncle, just like his father, had a real temper. The youngster, with his father, had soon learned how to deal with his father’s rage… his uncles was even worse though, and after ending up in the hospital a few times they had taken him away from there. He had been thrilled to bits, but soon he would learn that foster-care would be even worse. James was flexible though, and if there was anything he had learned in his young life, it was survival. A new responsibility was added though, when a few weeks ago his foster family had taken in a young 6 year old girl. So far though, he seemed to have been able to keep her out of trouble, or maybe that was just what he hoped.

He sighed. He didn’t even know why he cared anyway. His life was complicated enough without any other issues being thrown in.

He looked up only slightly when some girl decided to sit beside him. He raised an annoyed eyebrow. He had her pegged. Definitely not a kitten to be handled without cloves. Innocently looking, sure, but he wasn’t easily fooled.

“What’ya want sweetheart?” his southern accent filled the silence between them as his stormy sea-coloured eyes went back to the book on his lap once again, his attitude screaming ‘bored now’, and well… he was…
