Authors Note:
This is a ONE-SHOT FANFIC based off of a role play that has been 3 months in the making and is nowhere near complete. All things Harry Potter are copyright of JK ROWLING. The Romeo and Juliet quote is thanks to my main man WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE. The title is a lyric from a song of which the name escapes...but the band is THE SUNSTREAK. The ridiculous notion that Severus Snape enjoys to tango is thanks to my amazing role play partner WINTER. The story and...well..Nadine and her badass self is mine. Nadine Foxx FTW (That's 'For The Win' if you didn't know. Don't hate...some people dont know!)
Do enjoy! Leave feedback. I adore feedback! YAY!
A Different Song For A Different Dance.

Counting steps are for those who don’t know how to dance. I am not one of those people. I was a master, actually, and that was a secret of mine. It was not my only secret though, no. The other secret I had, my most coveted and precious of secrets had her left hand behind my neck, her right hand in my own, and her body pressed to mine. Her name was Nadine…and I was just as much her secret as she was mine.
The record player oozed a sultry tango that resonated through my office, allowing me to do something that I never did…release my inhibitions. On any other night I would have been sitting at my desk, grading papers of students who don’t know the first thing about potions and if it had been anyone else that had come knocking on my door I would have sent them away immediately. But it wasn’t any normal knock that came tonight; it was four very clear and distinct knocks. Four knocks always meant Nadine.
Over the months she had managed to uncover a part of me that I never showed to anyone. A part that I thought I had forgotten and left in a corner, to sit and collect dust. My heart was hardened as was my demeanor but this woman, this nymph, this…muse managed to dance her way into my life.
I resented her at first. Albus had alerted me that there would be someone coming into the school undercover as a student to protect, but he did me a huge personal disservice by bringing in Nadine. She had hair that was almost the same color as Lily’s, only darker and with curls that were so rebellious it seemed they would never be straightened like Lily’s always had been. And her eyes...those eyes. Eyes like emeralds which for the first month she was here I only saw my old friend. My old love. It was impossible to be around her for too long but she would not relent. She continued to get in trouble in my class in order to get detentions just so that she could have heart to hearts with me. Normally if she were just another student I wouldn’t have listened but Nadine was 26. She was an adult, and a woman with so many intriguing things to say that I eventually caught myself looking forward to our detentions.
We spoke of many things; her position at St. Mungo’s before coming to Hogwarts, My hidden passion for the arts, and her love of literature. She was determined and intelligent. Witty and coy. Sarcastic enough to keep up with me and she had a strike of rebellion in her…just like her hair. She was a leader, while Lily was a follower. She followed James everywhere but Nadine…Nadine wanted to be around me and in turn led me out of the rock I had managed to burry myself under. She even got me to dance again. Lily would have never danced with me.
Two months passed like that and now whenever I look at her my heart feels considerably lighter, and I know that the woman that I am looking at is absolutely not Lily. She is Nadine, and I will have her as mine for as long as she will let me.
We began to move faster. Step for step and turn for turn she followed me flawlessly. If someone had been watching they would have thought that we had been practicing for months. But this was an impromptu performance, and thankfully there were no eyes on us here. We were completely alone, just us two, the music, and our breaths which grew heavier with the crescendo of the violins until finally--- The music stopped. It was over and we ended with a low dip. I pulled her back to a vertical position and she smiled at me. That smile could make me do anything in the world as long as she promised to let me see her smile again when it was over.
She slid her hands away from me and took a step back, smiling coyly as she circled me. “Severus, you dance by the book” Shakespeare. Had anyone else tried to cleverly place a quote from Shakespeare in conversation I would have jinxed them because they would have used it incorrectly. But not Nadine. Nadine was the Mistress of well-placed Shakespeare. I smiled and turned quickly to put on another record before turning to her with an extended hand.
“O trespass sweetly urged…Give me my sin again.”
The new song began to play. Her hand slid into mine. Movements started again, smooth and fluid. From this moment on I made a promise to myself and a promise to her that She would never be compared to Lily. They were polar opposites in each other. It was the vivacity and wisdom that I so loved about Nadine when I looked into her eyes…not what they at first reminded me of.
