A young teen woke to pounding on his door.

“JAMES” came the low growl from outside his bedroom door giggled “JAMES you open this door now!”

“Whadda you want?” the blond boy groaned out as he slowly opened his eyes to greet a new day.

“You unlock this door now boy, or I’ll break it down” came the threat “Leave me alone!” the boy sighed annoyed. “James Ford, if you don’t come out now, I swear ta God, you’ll regret it.”. The blond groaned sitting up swinging his legs out from under the blankets and headed to the door unlocking it. Before he could open it though, the door swung open against his wrist, snapping it. The blond however showed nothing as he simply glared at the big guy before him “Yeah?” the boy questioned raising an eyebrow. The only answer was a hard smack in the face his head swinging to the side at the impact. The blond narrowed his eyes as he slowly turned his head back “Ya done?” he bit out. He might be acting all tough, but make no mistake, this guy scared the shit out of him. He just couldn’t let the older man see that, cause the day he did, might just be the day he died. He just was so tired of the man’s anger. James had his own Ford-temper to deal with, and that was more then enough.

Then he was grabbed by his arm and dragged to the living-room “Trust me Jamie, we ain’t done by a long shot” Sean growled shoving his nephew against the wall.

“You mind telling me what this is all about?” the youngster asked his eyes blazing, but mentally searching for escape-routes for if things really got out of hand.

“The police called me this morning” he started meaningfully and when the boy stayed quiet he narrowed his eyes “Well boy, ain’t ya gonna tell me what ya did?” he asked, but the blond stayed quiet again until he was punched in the face again “well??” he demanded.

“Whadda ya want me to say?” he asked ignoring the pain that had shot through him at the hit. It wasn’t as if he wasn’t used to it all.

“Tell me what ya did” the guy ordered and the blond bit back a ‘what’s the point if you already know?’ and broke eye contact for a split second. This was a mistake. It showed the older male that his tactics were working, and that James was intimidated…as much as he often refused to show it.

The boy found himself being grabbed by the collar and he was pulled forward threateningly “Don’t you make me ask again” the older man hissed.

“I didn’t do nothin’” the boy insisted.

This earned him another punch in the face. Blood was dripping down his chin and he just wiped it away.
“They said you and yer friends were out joyriding last night, you in particular all liquored up” he clarified.

The blond shrugged “and?” the boy asked.

“And they’re charging me a fine! Look at where we live! Ya think I have money ta spend on you and your foolishness?” he got in the boys face “You’re just good for nothing sack of shit” he growled in a dangerously low tone “I knew you where going to end up like your dead beat daddy”

The blond's face contorted in anger “Shut up!” he growled almost spitting fire taking a threatening step forward about to punch the bastard in the gut. His arm was grabbed though and before James could even register what was happening, a fist connected with his stomach, knocking the wind out of him, and then another with the side of his head. After a few more blows, darkness seemed to pass over his vision and he fell unconscious. He woke up a few minutes later, lying on his bed in his room. His whole body ached, as he painfully sat up and assessed his most recent injuries. Suddenly, his anger was gone and a sense of despair and hopelessness washed over him. He absolutely refused to let the tears that burned behind his eyes fall and he rummaged through one of his bag to take out a package of his ‘magic’ powder that just made everything seem less bad.

When he woke up again a small girl stood near his bed eyeing him carefully.

“You shouldn’t get in trouble…” she whispered climbing on the bed. The boy groaned slightly as his head was still pounding but he offered the girl a small smile “No worries sugar-pop” he assured “I’m just fine” he shrugged as there was a shout from downstairs. He sighed. Time to face yet another day in this fucking hell.

“James, get your lazy ass down here” came a shout from down the stairs.

The boy sighed “Coming” he yelled back even though he knew the danger behind it. He swung his legs from under the covers, quickly putting on some jeans and a baggy shirt. He walked into the kitchen where he got to work fixing the ‘happy family’ breakfast. He didn’t even really care what they did to him, He was used to it after all, but he just wished he could spare it the new arrival. A small seven year old girl smiled broadly as she sat down at the table. The man of the house was less pleased though, and before he could get ready for school he had to make sure the new injuries could not be seen and he took a quick shower to get the fresh blood off of him, then he grabbed his bag, took the girl by the hand and walked out of the house.

“Are you hurt?” the girl’s soft voice questioned.

The southerner shook his head “Nah sugar-pop, I’m fine” he smiled at her “come on, you don’t want to be late for school now do ya?” his southern accent drawled. Even after 8 years with the other family one could still hear he was from the South.. Tennessee to be exact.

The girl shook her head and when they arrived to the building he walked in with her and made sure she was alright before heading across the street where the high-school was situated.

James sighed as he walked up to his new school. He threw away his cigarette-but. He sighed his first class of the day.. history. Marvelous. Why did he even bother? He sighed sitting down in the back row. He yawned taking out his books and opened one he had just started reading. It might come as s bit surprise, but the young southerner loved to read. It was his way of escaping his hell-hole of a life. His casually leaned back in his seat his eyes lazily scanning the book. He really had no intention to pay any attention to the teacher what-so-ever.

The teacher had started his class and kept his eyes on the new blond that had just started school today. The boy seemed rather into the book he seemed to have brought instead of class. The older man smiled slightly and shook his head as he walked over to the blond’s desk.

“What was the cause of the WW1.. Mr. Ford?” he asked standing right before the boy.

“People are morons…” the boy replied lazily without looking up from his book.

The teacher was a little taken aback by the answer “thank you for that insight Mr. Ford. The rest of the class just chuckled.

James sighed bored “The relationships between the countries were already strained because of the new imperialism. When the crown prince of Austro-Hungary was killed in 1914, it was the last straw and tada… WW1” he summarized. There were a few more things that had contributed, but hell.. who cared? He hadn’t looked up from his book and now lazily turned a page.

The teacher raised an eyebrow “very well, just put the book away” he ordered smiling slightly.

The blond simply shrugged “sure teach” he responded putting the book back in his bag. He sighed… now how was he going to get through this class? He just leaned back in his seat staring out of the window. This was going to be one looong day. Luckily to bell sounded to at least end this nightmare... He slowly rose to his feet and collected his things before heading for the door...
